Mo Probs is the DJ alias of multifarious sound artist and producer, Mo Dafa. Mo primarily works in film music and sound design, incorporating sound with moving image in numerous forms. It’s with this sonic eye that Mo approaches DJing, monthly in their radio shows on NTS, in listening sessions, and more frequently, DJ sets in a club setting. Over the past 15 years in their previous homes of London and Berlin, Mo has been fostering and connecting an extensive music community by way of organising discussions, concerts, parties and workshops. Using multiple turntables, microphones and delay units, their sets incorporate a kaleidoscopic range of sandblasted textures somewhere between pulsating Acid and New Beat, Musique Concrète-inspired Post-Punk-Dub, whiplash inducing Bass music, and soundscape and field recording interludes thrown in with sub-bass heavy radiophonic noise. This all functioning together like a carefully considered sonic assault made for the dancefloor. Their monthly NTS shows expand upon the tradition of experimental radio and offer an insight into their influences, by way of an engaging and far-reaching travelogue of global music and plundered textures. Mo recently began working with performance and installation, constructing live site-specific work focusing on the spatial aspect of sound, in particular, the role of sound design in the creation of haptic space. Mo has performed at the Tate Modern Turbine Hall, London, Skulptureprojekte, Munich, and Vila Romana, Florence. They are interested in sound and our sense of place, the experience of listening, and how sound and silence can be disrupted as political tools. Mo currently lives and works in Lisbon and Barreiro, Portugal, where they are working on various projects, including an LP for release in 2020.
